It’s the time of the year when families across the nation enjoy cooking outdoors. While grilling is a great pastime, it can also be dangerous without the proper precautions. According to the National Fire Protection Association, over 19,000 people ended up in the emergency room with grill-related injuries between 2013 and 2017. Fortunately, you can avoid accidents by using these four grilling safety tips this summer.

Summer Grilling Safety Tips to Remember

These grilling safety tips apply for both charcoal and gas grills. Take care when grilling this summer to avoid injuries and property damage.

Keep Your Grill Away From Outside Structures

Of all the summer grilling safety tips, this one is the easiest. Choose the best location when setting up your grill. It’s important to keep the grill at least 10 feet away from your house and other outdoor structures. Cooking out requires good ventilation, so don’t grill in enclosed areas like on a screened-in porch.  Avoid umbrellas, canopy tents, outdoor furniture, and low-hanging tree branches.

Grilling Safety Tips Include Cleaning the Grill

Grease and fat build up on your grill with use and they can flare up and start a fire. Cleaning your grill regularly removes the fat and grease, and reduces the likelihood of a dangerous situation.

Check for Propane Leaks

If you use a propane grill, it’s a good idea to check for leaks before each use. Follow these steps and if you discover a leak, do not use the grill.

  • Get a dish of soapy water.
  • Apply a thin layer of soapy water around the gas tank and hose.
  • Turn on the gas. If there’s a leak, the soapy solution will bubble.

There are some other signs of a propane leak, like the smell of gas near your grill. If you have gas in your propane tank but are unable to get the flame to light, this is usually a sign that you have a hole in the hose.

Stabilize the Grill

Your grill should be placed on firm, level ground when in use. An unstable grill is more easily tipped over by a family pet, children, or even yourself when grilling. If you can’t stabilize the grill by moving it, invest in a mat to place under the grill.

Stay Safe While Grilling This Summer

During the summer, outdoor vegetation is dry so the fire risk is higher. Use these summer grilling safety tips to keep your family and property safe.
